After being in the front row of Dior's spring-summer 2025 fashion show by Maria Grazia Chiuri, we sat down to chat with Thalía, singer, actress, businesswoman and icon of Latin pop culture. She told us a little bit of everything: from her legendary wedding and the Dior wedding dress that never was (and why), to the authenticity and female empowerment that characterizes her, through the evolution of her personal style and the legacy of her career to new generations.

Santiago Nuño Villaseñor (SNV): Did you know that it is impossible for a Mexican to pass by St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York and not say: "That's where Thalía got married." What was it like choosing Mitzy's wedding dress? Is it true that it was going to be Dior?
Thalía (T): For that very important day I had the opportunity to choose between the most important designers to make my wedding dress, including the number one choice, Dior, then Vera Wang and others. But you know that when you get married in a traditional way they tell you that you have to wear something new, something used... that's why I wanted to wear something made by a designer who knew me well, and that's why I chose Mitzy. From the beginning he helped me a lot in my career, to create looks that I had in mind and he made them and they fit me perfectly, he was like my accomplice, that's why it was very important that he made my wedding dress. Also, I wanted it to have a mile-long train because I was very impressed by Princess Diana's dress. He made it with imported silk, silver embroidery and pearls, so it was a very long process, but when I put it on that cold December day 24 years ago, I felt wrapped in the dress that I had dreamed of since I was a little girl. So in the end it wasn't Dior because it had a more personal meaning.

SNV: What is your first memory of Dior? Do you have any particularly meaningful pieces?
T: My first memory of Dior was in my sisters' bedroom. I am the youngest of the five. They collected fashion magazines and recreated models they saw in photos, so I learned from them, and in one of the magazines there was a fashion editorial with a Dior dress in black lace over salmon pink lamé with a bow that fascinated me. I was older now, so I tore out the page and took it to the dressmaker in my neighborhood to make the dress for my 15th birthday party. I have always wanted to break the mold; at that time the fashion was the classic gigantic dress, having the big party and the cake, but it wasn't for me; I wanted a tight-fitting dress with a tube skirt and a low neckline. I had a ceremony in the church and from there we went to a disco.

SNV: How do you live the feminism that Maria Grazia Chiuri proposes for Dior?
T: I am very inspired by Maria Grazia because she is connecting with this important message of gender equality and women's empowerment through fashion. I find it wonderful that she takes this opportunity with such strength and lives feminism by embracing individuality. I do the same, relying on my strengths, using my platform to highlight the importance of women in all areas, that is how I live feminism. I believe that fashion can convey a message of power, security, acceptance and reinvention. You can be different versions of yourself at the same time, because through fashion your style evolves. It all depends on the moment of life you are in.

SNV: How has your personal style evolved and how would you describe it now?
T: My style is risky. It is flirtatious, feminine, modern, honest and original. I always try to put my ideas down on paper and look for someone who can design what I have in mind, and that is how I gradually found my team. That is how my style has evolved, but the essence is the same — I mean authenticity — trying to be different out of conviction, not because I want to attract attention, but because I like to wear extravagant things. I like colorful fabrics, embroidery, glitter, capes, long trains, leg openings and everything exaggerated. All of that is very much my own. Also, I always try to include my symbols like the heart, the Egyptian cross and crowns; things that agree with my thinking in the different facets of my life; with my emotional and spiritual evolution. There is a lot of evolution, but the essence is the same.

SNV: What do you enjoy most about the relationship between music and fashion?
T: I like diversity. That is, I can play with different styles, designers and visions with each piece for each song. Each outfit can tell the story of the song, of the lyrics that I want to convey to the person who sees me in a music video or in a photo. It's a whole universe, an imaginary that marks the person. So, for me it's very important that what I wear is consistent with the lyrics, the music and the emotion that my voice has in that interpretation. I can wear jeans with a white blouse and tennis shoes, like I did in my Primera Fila concert, because it was precisely very vulnerable, with very sensitive lyrics. I couldn't interpret that with a tight, low-cut dress, because each song has a story to tell and I use fashion as an ally in my career.

SNV: What would you say is a very "you" emblematic garment or accessory and why?
T: The silhouette I always go back to is the bodysuit with a high cut on the leg and a half-skirt at the back, like the look from my album Love, which had a little red bodysuit with a sweetheart neckline and a black train. It is a very recurring look because I feel like I am: I feel sexy, empowered, strong, daring, owner of myself and my body, happy, grateful and proud of who I am. Right at the lighting of the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, they invited me to sing my Christmas album, and I went back to that bodysuit because that garment makes me feel like me. It gives me the strength to turn on that switch and say: "Here is Thalía, dressed well."

SNV: How do you approach Gen Z who never saw you on TV?
T: I was always very nerdy, very tech-savvy. I was the one who always fixed the gadgets at home. So when the computer came along, the era of MySpace, Facebook and dot com, I made my website, thalia.com, and that's how I started blogging and taking my selfies, then my Instagram stories. I started with blogs, so it was very organic when it moved to social media because I already had that fan base that followed me. Technology is a tool that has helped me connect with different generations through Facebook, Instagram, but also YouTube and TikTok, and it has allowed me to really integrate into new points of view, visions and conversations.

SNV: What would you like to be your legacy for the new generations?
T: I feel happy with the woman I have become, so I live in gratitude. No matter what I undertake, be it music, acting, fashion, jewelry, home accessories or whatever; all of these companies have the identity of Thalía, which means that you can achieve everything that is in your mind and in your heart. Prepare yourself, study, learn and go for it, nothing is impossible. But, above all, be authentic, be you. Love yourself, respect yourself, love yourself. That is what I want to leave with my work to these generations and those to come: that everything is possible if you are genuine, if you love and respect yourself.

SNV: Which of your songs or lyrics do you think resonates the most with you and why?
T: Each one is good for each moment and each emotion, but I like two. One that I love is called Flores secas en la piel, which is from Love, one of my first albums. I love it because it talks about life, about how tomorrow you will have the years printed on your skin like stains of dried flowers. You have to live life with all the passion, with all the love, with all the experiences and not be left wanting before that moment arrives. That song reminds me of that and I love listening to it. And the other is Arrasando, because everything is positive, everything is you can do it, everything is entrepreneurial, everything is you first. It doesn’t matter what they say about you, it doesn’t matter if they criticize you, you follow your path, keep moving forward and keep conquering life always.

SNV: What have been your most recent musical projects? What new projects do you have in the works?
T: In 2024 there was a lot of music and amazing things. In Miami, during the summer, I came up with the idea of writing a Christmas album. Singing it in December was a caress to the heart because it has been a complicated time, very difficult emotionally, and without knowing it, the album Navidad Melancólica fell like a blessing and the path was already prepared for it to happen. Now, I am very excited to start the year with music and I am even more excited because we are already coordinating several single releases and that is something that makes me happy. Music is something that keeps me in tune and moving, because there is always a collaboration with which you learn from a new singer, a composer or a producer. There is always a style of music to try, a fusion of rhythms to create or a choreography to invent. Music always has something to give you and that is why I am happy to be able to continue creating music always.
