MEXICO CITY. - Thalía was invaded by the Christmas spirit ahead of time.
Last Friday (November 1, 2024) she released her album Navidad Melancólica, and on a getaway to Mexico City, the singer confessed that she began composing the songs since March, out of pure intuition and feeling.
"I was in Miami, it was March, my children were on vacation... Let's go to the beach...? Yessss. Then the label calls me and says, 'There are a couple of new songwriters here in the studio... Want to come over?' I was like, 'Let's do it!'" shared the singer and actress.
During these sessions, the Marimar star was inspired to create a Christmas album featuring seven tracks: Nueva Navidad, Tengo Lo Que Quiero, Nació La Luz (with Marcos Witt), Velitas, Barrio Bravo En Navidad, Al Mundo Paz, and Feliz Navidad.
"After composing an amazing song, I sat down and said, 'I'm really craving Christmas... maybe some hot chocolate, a little Mexican food... So I asked them, 'Do you want to get into a Christmas mood with me, or am I just being crazy right now in March?' And they were in."
The appeal of these songs is that the 53-year-old artist conveys very personal messages about the joy of being well, the company of loved ones despite differences and conflicts, and the love for a life of struggle to find pleasure and peace.
"In less than three weeks, the album was made, and this is something that had never happened to me. All my albums had always been planned, where I would think, 'What am I going to do now? I want something new!'"
"And this album came out that way, which is why I think it feels so rich and honest. It feels like we truly wanted to say this because, suddenly, we were caught up in the idea that everything at Christmas is beautiful, everyone is friends, and in the family, everyone is happy... but no! There are moments when it's not. This album reflects that."
Sonically, the album stands out by deviating from the typical holiday sound, incorporating genres like bachata, cumbia, and pop. The songs are performed in a variety of tonalities, offering a fresh and diverse musical experience for the Christmas season.
"It was a very fun process for this album. I've always enjoyed meeting new people and learning from new generations. The songs, I think, are meant to make you dance, but they also make you think," says Thalía.
The Latin music star expresses her happiness about being in the city where she was born to present this work, which she is very proud of.
She clarifies that although it may seem like she doesn't visit Mexico often, she comes very frequently to see her family, friends, and to eat at her favorite restaurants.
Her business side complements her artistic one. Part of her visit was to attend to her businesses in an eyewear line and a women's shoe line.
However, music is the one that currently defines her path.
In acting, despite her telenovelas still being successfully aired on TV, is not something she plans to return to.
"I love acting, but the filming schedules for a telenovela... that's something I wouldn't get into for anything! I mean, waking up every day at a certain time, going through long makeup sessions, having to redo a tear because the light went out, and getting slapped again... so right now, that's not for me."
Excited and looking forward to Navidad Melancólica, Thalía remains focused on her work in an industry where fashion largely drives the market.
"The path is the one you choose. If you think you should be the one where you do what everyone else is doing because it's popular, then you're not being honest, and your followers won't believe you."
"I believe you must be honest, direct, and true to who you are, making sure it aligns with what you're singing. This is something you learn along the way, through the falls. It's about learning. Perseverance will take you to your dreams," Thalía emphasizes.
