The singer and actress reviews her path through the fashion Oscars and tells Vogue Mexico and Latin America what the experience is like as an insider.
Thalía is a fashion visionary and it is a title she has hard-earned throughout her career. From the 80s as a member of the pop group Timbiriche, through the beginning of her great solo moment in the 90s – which brought with it memorable looks such as that top made with guitars, or a skirt in the shape of a mariachi hat –, until reaching currently, in which her time at the MET Gala can be considered her consolidation as a Mexican pop culture icon.
And it is no small feat to be a recurring guest at the fashion Oscars. You have to have a certain stylistic sensitivity to remain on the list of attending celebrities. The interpreter of Amor a la Mexicana has officially attended the event eight times, so her archive on this red carpet is particularly vast and interesting.
What is it like to attend a MET Gala (in Thalía's words)?
With all this in mind, it's fair to say that if anyone knows about the MET Gala, it's Thalía. There are few celebrities who are honest about their experience at the event, but the most recent review that the Mexican singer gave through her outfits at the MET Gala for Vogue Mexico and Latin America, has answered questions that – let's face it – all of us have we ever been curious: what is it like to attend the MET Gala? And what happens after the MET Gala red carpet?
Between anecdotes of the first times she attended the event dressed in Latin designers, hilarious moments like the one in which she asked Tommy Hilfiger to highlight her well-known "Thalía waist" with a peplum dress; or when she defied time by attending while in an advanced pregnancy; Thalía revealed, to begin with, how she prepares for an event of this magnitude. Beyond the popular and eccentric beauty rituals that celebrities undergo, for her the most important thing is to "be mentally, emotionally and spiritually strong", take the time for a relaxing bath or watch a movie accompanied by her children, "that always helps," she says.
An internal preparation for the simple act of walking on a red carpet may seem exaggerated, but if we see it from Thalía's perspective , the camera flashes, the atmosphere that seems far from all mundane reality and the encounter with some of the most influential people in the world can be overwhelming. This is what arriving at the MET Gala is like: "You leave your hotel or your apartment, you get into this giant car where they are transporting you, there is traffic that you don't know if you are going to arrive on time, there are times when you have to leave early and you walk with the dresses to get to your spot on time."
Do you have to wait in line to enter the MET Gala? Indeed, but it is not the typical line, of course. "I see people who say: 'oh my God, there is this one and there is the other one,'" Thalía says excitedly. Then comes the great moment of posing on the carpet: "All those flashlights, you turn around, it's like in slow motion, you walk as if you were levitating and when you least realize it you are already inside the MET Gala, you don't know what happened since you appeared, you went up the stairs and entered. Everything is so overwhelming, so magical and so fun."
What happens after the MET Gala red carpet?
Various users on social networks joke with the idea that the MET Gala fashion is something similar to the Hunger Games fashion, but in real life. Thalía has another interpretation about this moment: being inside this party is like a scene from The Great Gatsby. Some of her most memorable memories include dancing to Cher and Katy Perry. The singer defines living the experience as a true insider as "magical". "When you are there it is like a camaraderie, like 'we are celebrating life', like the Great Gatsby movie. Everyone is celebrating and we are enjoying life."
